Carlow-Kilkenny FC 3 Waterford FC 2

Niall Rowe’s 62nd minute strike was enough for Carlow-Kilkenny to claim their first ever win, as they came from behind twice to claim the points at IT Carlow on Saturday.

It was a fairly even start with both teams pressing hard. Carlow-Kilkenny ‘keeper, Oliwer Oleksiewicz made a crucial intervention after just three minutes to deny the visitors. The hosts went close on eleven minutes as Oscar Brennan’s corner from the left found Evan Connolly who blasted the ball over the bar from the edge of the box. Myles Hutton went close a minute later. Waterford weren’t to be kept out of the game though as Cian Browne blasted over from distance after twenty minutes. They went very close to taking the lead just seconds later as Ivan Homoki headed down across the face of the goal from the right. Midway through the half, Cian Franey went close as he found his shot deflected wide after a good cross from Rowe on the left. A minute later, Waterford took the lead as Legan Oki’s corner from the right found Kyle Cuddy in the middle who rose highest to head the visitors ahead. They went close again as Dylan Butler curled one towards the top corner, going narrowly wide. Carlow-Kilkenny equalised four minutes from the break as Ross O’Brien came in from the right and shot into the bottom left hand corner. Waterford fought back in injury time and retook the lead as Butler fired in from the right with the ball appearing to go through Oleksiewicz’s legs.

Carlow-Kilkenny came out with a renewed enthusiasm after the break and they went close seven minutes in as Rowe’s shot deflected over the bar before Connolly struck the resulting corner over. Waterford went close as Scott Delahunty’s free was hit towards Bill Hughes in goal. Carlow-Kilkenny equalised on the hour mark as Carlow’s Brennan counter-attacked down the right and crossed in for O’Brien to strike again. Two minutes later, Rowe fired Carlow-Kilkenny into the lead as he got onto the end of former Hanover Harps man, Adam McCarron’s free from the right and slotted it in. They almost added a fourth when Rory O’Dowd shot straight at the ‘keeper. Try as they might, Waterford could not find a way past the Carlow-Kilkenny defence as Dean Larkin hit Cian Browne’s free from the left wide. Hughes made a crucial intervention as he came out to stop Butler who was through on goal from the right. Deep into stoppage time, Hughes hit Delahunty’s corner away, summing up the visitors frustration. Brennan went close in the dying seconds, narrowly missing the far
