Airtricity Under 15 League Cup
Carlow Kilkenny advance in the National Cup

Wexford FC 1-1 Carlow Kilkenny FC (3-5 on penos)

This U15 local derby needed extra time and penalties to separate two extremely hard working and committed teams. Carlow Kilkenny edged this gruelling encounter on penalties to progress to the last 16 of the National Cup

Carlow Kilkenny started slightly better than there opponents and Oscar Brennan who was looking sharp early on had the first effort with a good strike from 25 yards out which just went wide of the right hand post. Carlow Kilkenny got rewarded for their early pressure on 15 mins when Brennan picked the ball up on the edge of the Wexford box, beat the defender and shot towards goal. Wexford keeper Aaron Phelan made a magnificent save from Brennan’s shot but Eoghan Byrne reacted quickest to finish and give the visitors the lead. Wexford didn’t let the goal effect them and Patrick Remiasz long range effort nearly gave the hosts the equaliser only for Ben Goodwin to tip the ball over the crossbar. The remainder of the first half was very even with Rory O Dowd’s and Darragh McGurie’s headed efforts going narrowly wide been the last 2 chances of the first half.

The first chance of the second half went to Wexford when Dylan McEvoy’s cross found Evan Farrell at back post who controlled expertly but his shot just went over. Substitute Cian Byrne came closest to doubling the visitors lead only for his first time volley to fly past the left hand post. Carlow Kilkenny always posed a threat on the break in the second half but couldn’t get the crucially important second goal and Wexford’s resilience paid off when Evan Connolly’s mishit shot found Farrell with 3minutes remaining at the back post where he cooly slotted under Goodwin in the goal to bring the game to extra time.

Both teams pushed and pushed for the winner in extra time but the two defences stood strong and penalties were inevitable. Carlow Kilkenny scored 5 expertly taking penalties and Zach Bay Hammond’s final penalty proved the winner on a long night in Ferrycarrig.
